Amazing New Seaweed Found in Cornwall!

Scientists have discovered a tiny new type of red seaweed living in Cornwall’s special underwater maerl beds after searching for it for more than 40 years! The exciting discovery was made by divers exploring the Fal Estuary and studying the health of these important marine habitats.
Maerl beds are like underwater forests, providing safe places for crabs, starfish, scallops, fish and many other sea creatures to live. Finding a brand new species reminds us that nature still has many secrets waiting to be discovered. It’s a wonderful example of how careful observation, curiosity and science help us learn more about the amazing wildlife found around the Cornish coast.

OCEAN CONSERVATION TRUST

Our Trustee Tony Bowden has been driving a connection with the Ocean Conservation Trust and the Roseland Centre was recently delighted to provide a home base for divers from the Ocean Conservation Trust working on replanting the sea grass beds just off the coast.
