ABOUT THE ROSELAND CENTRE

In the summer of 2022, The Roseland Centre Charity successfully raised funds to buy the former Cornwall Council Outdoor Activity and Education Centre in the village of St. Just-in-Roseland, Cornwall. Located on Cornwall’s scenic Roseland Peninsula, in the village of St. Just-in-Roseland, Cornwall, this former Victorian Methodist School was for many years successfully run as Cornwall Outdoors ROEC, (Roseland Outdoor Education Centre), and was used by organisations such as the Royal Yachting Association, (RYA), British Canoeing, as well as local and out of County schools, groups and individuals from all backgrounds, abilities and needs.

It was well known as the place where primary school groups from around Cornwall and the wider areas, and even Continental Europe, came to engage in safe, enjoyable outdoor learning and activity such as learning to kayak, canoe, and sail, as well as being challenged by orienteering and cohesive experiences in the beautiful Cornish countryside.

VISION & OBJECTIVES

Against all odds, we have created a community-led, residential Centre enabling a range of outdoor educational and cultural experiences, to promote health, well-being and sustainability for children and young people, and we are developing a long-term community hub for allThis has entailed the commissioning and execution of substantial refurbishments to the building, ensuring it is disability compliant, renovating all the dormitories and the purchase of new bunkbeds and mattresses, and renewing the kitchen and all fire safety equipment.

OUR TRUSTEES

Chair – Keith Ives: Moved to Cornwall in 1986. Savoy trained chef, spent 40 years in the catering industry, was the resident chef at the Centre, (previously Cornwall Outdoors Roseland Outdoor Education Centre), 2010 – 2016. St Just-in-Roseland Parish Councillor. Original member of the TRC committee, formed to save the Centre, now the Charity Chair.

Treasurer – Gordon Humphreys: Went to Outward Bound Sea School, Aberdovey, for a month’s course at age 16, then left school and joined my first ship as a Deck Cadet in the Merchant Navy a couple of months later, aboard an oil tanker on a voyage from Milford Haven to the Persian Gulf. At 19 ½  I sat for my 2nd Mate Certificate, and at 25 for my 1st Mate Certificate, but after a couple more years at sea and many hours of looking at horizons worldwide, I came ashore to help control a fleet of oil tankers from a desk in London, looking after up to 40 tankers from the Persian Gulf to the US East Coast on a 24/7/365 basis. I then moved on through various oil & commodity trading companies, finally ending up as Vice President (Shipping Operations) of an American energy trading company before retiring at 69. Subsequently worked as a volunteer Treasurer for several local Charities including NCI before joining TRC.

Qualities – good with spreadsheets, and solving practical problems.

Tony Bowden: Tony is a long-standing member of the Roseland community in Cornwall sharing his time between Cornwall and West London. Tony was born in London, but has visited Cornwall every year of his life as did his Father.  Tony is an entrepreneur with many years of experience in the world of education and healthcare technologies. Tony co-founded Espresso Education with Lewis Bronze MBE and jointly sold the company to Discovery Education in the process visiting hundreds of primary and secondary schools. Tony places great importance on being a good collaborator and acting as a mentor. Outside of his work as a Trustee responsible for fund raising at The Roseland Centre, Tony is also a Trustee at The Hogarth Youth and Community Centre.

Paul O’Grady:

Sheelah Goldsmith: I am a retired English and Drama teacher, with my first 6 years teaching being in Camberley, Surrey, the next 6 at Camborne Comprehensive teaching 11-18 and the last 20  years at The Roseland School, now the Roseland Academy, also over the years teaching media studies, history and PSHE. I retired from teaching in April 2011.

I have stayed at TRC with 2 of my different Year 7 tutor groups when it was the Outdoor Education Centre run by Cornwall Council and so personally know the great value of residential stays with ones pupils. I am excited by the way TRC  has been kept for the community and especially pleased that its refurbishment has made it very well insulated, with triple glazing too, and it has a great emphasis on sustainability as I am a long term environmentalist. I have been a member of Friends of the Earth since the 1980s and a frontline member of Green Peace since 1983, so, I have kept myself abreast of many environmental issues for decades. I am also a founder member of the Roseland Environment Action Community Team, (REACT), which Professor Richard Cochrane started after a Climate Change Conference I initiated at Falmouth University in March 2019. I am especially excited by the emphasis TRC is going to be putting on running courses on sustainability and marine conservation. I am a Reiki master and reflexologist with a keen interest in holistic healing and well being.

Graham Turpin: Graham has worked as a Clinical Psychologist within the NHS and also for the Universities of Plymouth and Sheffield. He coordinated the development of a new role within the NHS – Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners to support the Improving Access to Psychological Therapy Programme, and was seconded for several years to the Department of Health as a National Advisor for Education and Training. He has held senior roles within the British Psychological Society, including being a trustee of the Charity. He has been granted Fellowships from the Royal Society of Medicine and the Academy of Social Sciences. Since retiring, he has moved to the Roseland where he has also been a trustee and Chair of the local Roseland Festival.

HISTORY

As an important part of St. Just-in-Roseland heritage, the building started life in 1893 and was the local Methodist school up until the late 1940’s. Some local residents still remember it fondly as the place where they sat at their desk in their first-ever classroom.

The site has seen extensive refurbishment since its purchase by The Roseland Centre Charity, who fundraised to achieve this and continued to raise donations throughout Phase2. The refurbishment was very complex and time specific with local trades working hard to problem solve the various issues and curveballs that a Victorian build can give.
