TRC NEWSLETTER – Autumn 2024

Dear Friends of The Roseland Centre – Welcome!

GENERAL

We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Summer and made the most of any sunshine before this Autumnal cloak surrounded us. This is our very first quarterly newsletter update – we very much hope it will be well received.

Since our formal opening on June 1st of this year, the Roseland Centre (“TRC”) has blossomed into a truly special place.  We are working hard to become a beacon of community support and a catalyst for personal growth, outdoor learning and adventure, sustainable choices and a flagship for programmes and experiences that are unique and meaningful – right here on The Roseland Peninsula.

RESIDENTIAL

What a Summer it has been! The Centre, facilities, resources and dedicated staff/volunteers were stretched to meet the demand during our first warm season of trade. Local schools invested in bespoke residential packages of indoor and outdoor activities, with evening games and celebrations to round off their stay. Our softer activities have ranged from problem-solving and team building challenges to bushcraft and “art attack” workshops, music and creative sessions, map reading, and local beach cleans. Our harder activities such as paddle sports, sailing and rock climbing, have been made possible with huge thanks to local adventure activity providers Canoe Cornwall, Roseland Paddle & Sail, and Via Ferrata Cornwall.

HOLIDAY ACTIVITY CLUB

Our Holiday Activity Clubs have proved to be very successful and have welcomed lots of local children from as far away as Grampound and Tregony. They are themed and full of indoor and outdoor learning such as science experiments, bushcraft, musical festival celebrations, “art attack” sessions and Olympic Games celebrations.  Holiday Clubs are set to continue and since our very first delivery 28th-30th May 2024, these clubs have welcomed 116 children, and with half-term approaching, that number is set to rise.

FACILITIES

Our accessible facilities have been tried, tested and tweaked by the fantastic local accessible activity charity Active8, that aims to empower and motivate young people aged 14-30 years old, who have a physical disability. Our two Wetroom showers and toilets have performed well, and we gained a rating of Level 5 from the Food Standards Agency for our lovely little commercial kitchen, which also has been stretched since June 1st, when we were cooking for up to 34 at a time.

The summer months certainly put our Centre to the test, and we are delighted to report that our facilities and staff all worked very well to make sure that every aspect of the TRC experience was properly looked after and worthy of success. We believe the innovative activities devised and delivered by our dedicated, qualified, staff have created lasting memories for all those who participated.

The green spaces that surround our Centre have been transformed into areas to promote teamwork, outdoor play, and challenging activities. These experiences foster essential soft skills such as trust, leadership, resilience, and perseverance, equipping participants with valuable tools for both personal and academic success in the future.

COMMUNITY

Since September this year, we have expanded our offerings to include crafting clubs and magical day events designed to cater to the specific needs of our community. Our morning Pioneers Café provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the elderly, who can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, receive IT support, information and guidance around memory loss/the onset of dementia and learn new digital skills from our Digital Champion, (Duty Centre Manager Mandy). In support of this we are currently in talks with a national initiative network called Sustainable Prevention, Innovation and INvolvement NETwork (SPIINNET). It will combine research power from 14 universities across the UK with specialist organisations and bring together individuals living with dementia, carers and family members, researchers, and people working for charities, health and social care services and industries.

SPINNET will unite existing networks and umbrella organisations and deliver a programme that will use and make connections between the experience, knowledge and resources of people across the network.

Activities will include workshops where people can meet to design research projects together, training events, funding innovative ideas, meetings to raise awareness about dementia and prevention, and annual conferences to share learning.

For younger members of our community, we have launched a collaboration with the Pawprint Family, which offers exciting after-school activities, supporting life skills and creative arts for young members of the community. The children are currently crafting lots of thoughtful artwork and nature-based creations inspired by the beloved children’s book “Stick Man.”

Additionally, our Moo Music sessions provide a magical dance, small world and play experience for babies and toddlers, fostering early childhood development whilst supporting local families.

Our commitment to community service extends beyond our core programs. The Community Garden, first established in 2023, has flourished under the dedicated efforts of our trustees and volunteers. This thriving garden has provided fresh produce for our visiting groups, fostering a sense of connection with nature whilst promoting conversation and action around sustainable living.

As responsible corporate citizens, we have also taken steps to protect our local environment. We have partnered with the Marine Conservation Society to become Beach Clean Leaders, organizing regular beach clean-ups in the local area. These efforts contribute to the vital, national work of preserving our coastlines and oceans for future generations.

VOLUNTEERING

We always welcome individual volunteers and group collaborations for volunteer events and projects that run seasonally. Our Community Garden volunteer group would love to see more green fingered helpers through the gates – please do get in touch if you feel you can support this.

MOVING FORWARD

Looking ahead, TRC is brimming with exciting ideas and initiatives. We are actively exploring the development of a satellite site that will offer even more opportunities for outdoor education and adventure. This expansion will solidify our position as a recognised provider of outdoor learning experiences and further enhance our reputation as a hub for community engagement and personal growth.

We are also very close to launching our Charity’s new website – www.theroselandcentre.org The website you see now is out of date, but our new site should be available online within the next month and will allow you to book experiences and hire residential accommodation at the click of a button – watch this space!

The journey that has brought us to this point has been marked by collaboration, dedication, and a shared passion for creating a positive impact. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the talented team of individuals who have worked tirelessly to make The Roseland Centre the extraordinary place that it is today.

If you wish to support our Charity or join us in our journey and volunteer, please do get in contact – we would love to hear from you.
